InStyle: Stílusnagykövetünk ajánlja: A legjobb gasztrohelyek Pécsen

december 03, 2015

It will be hard to sum up the whole gastronomy of Pécs in one post, but with so many interesting things to see, I will have to try.

So everyone can choose a restaurant according to their taste and mood, I will give you all of my favorites:
- the Jókai Bisztró, if you would like to have a nice wine besides the delicious food. By the way it is considered to be the best in town
- Bohémia Sörkonyha, if you would like to have the best burger in the city.
- Főnix, if you are craving Pizza or any kind of italian pasta or dishes, they are unbeatable in this in Pécs.
- Bellagio, if you would like to have a steak or a sushi
- Tex-Mex, if you are looking for mexican food
- Replay, if you want something really trendy, let it be an afternoon snack, a cocktail at night or dinner.
- Susogó Borvendéglő, if you are looking for something exclusive and special.

A város legjobb kávézója / The best coffee in town

If I could describe it in just two words, I'd say professionalism and love. The Pécsi Kávé reinterprets coffee, because in here they don't expect from us to know all the different types and roasts of coffees, but they recommend one from their huge selection of coffees before ordering. The question is not which is their best coffee, because the quality is constant and high, they know all the parameters and the place of production of their imported coffee. In addition, they are professionals in the making as well, they did not accidentally win several national competitions (eg Cofee in good spirit), but they recently won the Made In Pécs audience prize, that is especially dear to their hearts, because it was when they have been open for only half a year. Their relationship with the guests is very important to them, so you can feel the intimate, friendly atmosphere that surrounds the place right away when you step in. The name is a message that they represent local values, and this is also supported by the fact that the pictures on the walls are made by their friends and the cakes you can buy are from a local confectionery. As I wrote, there is a huge selection of drinks, including exciting hot and cold coffee, special teas like Japanese matcha tea, which attracts many foreign guests. Literary and thematic evenings are held to showcase specialties and novelties.

A város legjobb cukrászdája / The best confectionery in town

I fell in love with this cute little place for the first time already. Everything is pastel colored, there ae little flowers on the table and it is so cute, that it feels like I'm in a dollhouse or a playhouse. The confectionery opened in 2014, and they felt that this is what's missing from Pécs besides its many values. The pastry chef started working at the old Susugó restaurant, then trained herself in several places and finally returned to her roots, so she can use all of her experiences from different parts of the world in Pécs. The confectionery is French, which is can be felt mostly in the technology, ingredients, shapes and flavors. Quality overwrites everything, whether it's the material, any stage of the production or the final product. The choice of products varies seasonally, but sometimes it changes from hour to hour, they are constantly trying to renew themselves to always be better. Professional development and closeness to people are equally important to them. They pay attention on people with food allergies, so they have a lot of gluten-free cakes and lactose-free sorbets. The quality of the cookies is impeccable, and my personal favorites are dark chocolate nuts, cheesecakes and macarons.

A város legjobb csokija / The best chocolate in town

Choco-Láda (= Chocolate Box) started as a small family business three years ago, with the idea that there is not even one traditional chocolate shops in the south. Quality has always been a top priority, that's why they have collected the best chocolates from around the world, from small chocolates to big boxed chocolates. They are constantly evolving and innovating, 2 years after the opening they started to pour chocolate themselves. The Hungarian Chamber of Trade and Industry has awarded the with the Hungarian Handicraft Prize for their chocolates that represent the values and sights of Pécs. They consist of small mosaics, with works of Zsolnay and Vasarely, and the mosaics will give you a picture of the city square. The most popular chocolates are the ones presenting the flavors of Pécs, my personal favorites are fig-almond and bear-onion-salted. They have two shops, one in the Zsolnay quarter and one on the Király Street, the latter is serving as a café and a spectacular workshop too. They held a Chocolate Thursday on every Thursday in the Zsolnay quarter, which is a tasting experience for children and adults alike and on March 5-6 will be the 4th Pécs Chocolate Carnival, where other chocolate makers from the country are taking part and making lots of fun for us.

Wine takes a huge part in the gastronomy of Pécs. The hilly landscape and the Mediterranean climate are perfect for viticulture and wine making. The Pannon Wine Region, which includes the Pécs, Szekszárd, Tolna and Villány wine regions, is proud of its famously fine, quality red and white wines. This is confirmed by the many events devoted to wine in the city. I have already mentioned the Sétatér Festival, but there is also the Sparkling Wine Festival and the Pécs Spring Wine Festival. Wine lovers from all over the country visit the Pannon Wine Region Top 25 Tasting event, where you can try the really best wines of the region. The European Wine Song Festival brings together choirs, musicians and dancers to sing "In wine there is joy, friendship and song", bringing together culture and wine. The Cirfandli is a famous variety of Pécs, made both dry and late-harvested delicacies. If you feel like your knowledge in this subject is not enough or just want to learn more about wine, visit the University Wine Seminar, where famous winemakers from all over the country give lectures.
